Aquatic Weed Spraying

Kia ora koutou,

Boat based spraying of aquatic weed is being carried out on Lake Wanaka using the herbicide diquat, today Wednesday 18th May 2022. This will exclude weekends and public holidays.

The following sites may be targeted for treatment:

Lake Wanaka

  • Glendhu Bay
  • Glendhu Bluff Bay
  • Parkins Bay
  • Paddock Bay
  • Fern Burn
  • Wanaka Marina
  • Eely Point
  • Roys Bay

Diquat in gel form will be used to treat aquatic weeds. This work is dependent on suitable weed, water and weather conditions and therefore the timing is subject to change.

Please find attached a factsheet prepared by NIWA providing information on Diquat.

Advertisements have been placed in the Otago Daily Times to notify the public of this operation.

We recommend a 24 hour stand-down on swimming, fishing or taking water for irrigation and domestic supply during and once the spraying is complete. This stand down will end at 7:00pm Thursday 19th May.

If you have questions in relation to this work, please feel free to call us on 0800 638 943 or keep up to date with treatment progress nearer to the time on the LINZ website.

Wanaka Marina AGM

The AGM for Wanaka Marina was held at The Edgewater Hotel on Sunday the 13th of February 2022 and we were pleased to report there was a good attendance with a total of 18 persons present.
Apologies were received from a further 2 persons and 5 people offered their proxy votes.
The matters from the previous meeting on 15/11/2020 were accepted. There were no matters arising.
The financial statements for the year ending 30/6/2021 were presented to the members and will be available to any shareholder on request as would a copy of the 2022 AGM minutes when finalised.
Mention was made of the recent inspections of the marina by OCEL of Christchurch above and below the water line. We are pleased to report that with our ongoing maintenance that the marina is good condition.
The Auditors, PKF Goldsmith were appointed again for  the ensuing year.
GREBE PROJECT
John DARBY and Marcus HERMANS attended the AGM by invitation regarding their extensive work with the Grebe breeding project now attracting national and international popularity.

John thanked the board and berth holders for their continued support. Should any berth holder find a problem with any of the pontoons used for the grebes do not hesitate to contact a member of the board and a message will be passed on to John and Marcus.

DIRECTORS ELECTIONS
The rotation of Board Directors as per every 2 years required Lynden Cleugh and Gerry Clemens to retire. They were formally nominated by Mike Barker and were duly unanimously re-elected. There were no further nominations.
Paul MOODIE was present as a Chartered Director with an extensive experience in governance, who had been instructed by the board to review the directors fees.

The fees had not been reviewed since 2014. His proposal was moved and seconded by 2 shareholders  who were present following Paul’s presentation. This reflects the amount of work undertaken by the board and their responsibilities to the shareholders  and legally under the Health and Safety legislation.

THE DELTA BUILD UP

The Delta build up opposite the marina and Lakeside Road is continuing to cause concern. There have been 2 reports compiled by the ORC and one by Envirolink commissioned by Wanaka marina. They appear to corroborate each other, suggesting the build up of schist and shingle has been caused because of the flow of water from the stream. On the 3/2/22 Richard Powell an infrastructure engineer from QLDC met with the board on the marina to discuss the problem. They have offered a solution to the water pressure as can be seen on the Wanaka Marina website but an agreement is yet to be reached regarding the removal of the build up which is now quite prominent given the level of the lake. The board will continue to raise this issue with both ORC and QLDC with a view to solving the problem.

LAGAROSIPHON

There was a very successful treatment of the Lagarosiphon weed which is situated in the vicinity of the marina in early 2021. Another application is anticipated in the very near future when conditions are right which we hope will eradicate this invasive weed.

MAINTENANCE  PROJECT
The ongoing maintenance of the marina continues. During stronger than usual winds the marina may suffer some minor structural damage which we aim to put right as soon as identified. Please let us know of anything you become aware of.

Tup Blunt our outgoing Maintenance manager left the marina in excellent condition and our incoming manager Craig Fahey is carrying on in the same manner. Please stop and say hello if you see him on the marina. Craig will also be offering his assistance for personal requests such as fenders, ropes or help with your boats. He regularly checks the marina and all the vessels so will contact any berth holder if he finds anything untoward.

INSURANCE

The insurance for the marina is due for renewal in March 2022. The initial reports are not favourable as despite having never made a claim our current insurers are looking to reduce our cover by 50%. The board are doing everything they can to find adequate cover for the future.

WANAKA LAKES COASTGUARD
Mike Barker reported that the arrival of a new vessel donated from the Americas Cup would be arriving soon and will be placed on a berth offered by a generous shareholder at the marina until the shed currently under construction at Eely Point is ready for occupation.
Thank you for taking the time to read this abridged version of the minutes. Should you wish to see a full record please contact Kathryn Miller at Findex.
Please continue to use the Wanaka Marina website for any contact details and updates regarding the issues referred to in this letter.

Wanaka Marina Fuel Outage

CCTV wanaka marina

As some of you have already learned, the fuel at the marina was unavailable yesterday. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience. The team at RD Petroleum, who manages the fuel service at the marina, has been working hard to remedy the situation.
The service is again available this morning (January 3rd), however, there is still an issue causing the fuel to dispense more slowly than is desirable, techs are working on this currently.

The management team at the marina is working closely with the folks at RD petroleum to make sure full service is restored as soon as possible.

Happy boating!

Wild weather from the west

Hi Folks,

Day 3 of heavy winds from the west and a very rough Lake Wanaka! I have been checking on the marina and all vessels several times a day. So far so good. Seveal boats have needed additional lines because of breakages, as backup or to keep them away from danger. It’s a good reminder to take the time to ensure the your docking lines are maintained and up to the task in conditions like this.

Best wishes for christmas and the new year,

Craig Fahey

Marina Operations Manager

MARINA CCTV

The CCTV cameras recently installed for security purposes at Wanaka marina are now up and running. The images and recorded video have already been effective in identifying issues relating to the security of the space. While we are unable to share the security camera feed, we are happy to take images of individual vessels for owners who are out of town and wish to see the condition of their boats for maintenance purposes. Delta Build Up

For the past 12 months, the Wanaka Marina management team has been working with ORC, QLDC, and other parties to determine the cause of the delta build-up on the inside of the Marina, adjacent to the Marina Terrace development site outflow. Every effort was made to have this work completed prior to the completion of the recently opened boardwalk.
QLDC has conducted their own research and has offered the following solution…
“Sorry that this has been so drawn out but it has been a challenge to determine the source of the sediment, nevertheless from the images you have provided the problems are at the end of the pipe, so this is where we are proposing a solution.
The image below is a concept of the solution, a relatively simple solution of placing rock structures (detailed design being done) around the outlet, this will provide two positive effects.
1.       It will reduce the flow velocities from the pipe which will allow the sediment to settle more before leaving the network but more importantly it won’t have the energy to push the sediment out into the marina.
2.       The structure will create a catch basin that sediment can easily and periodically be removed from.”
No timeline for the above has been given.
An independent consultant engaged by Wanaka Marina Ltd has done his own testing and measurement and is of the professional opinion that the proposed QLDC measure will not be effective.
Work continues toward pushing for an effective solution at removing the delta build-up and mitigating future sediment build-up inside the marina.
